In the baby nursery

Baby and toddler nursery services

At our family centres in Hampshire we provide nursery services for deaf babies and toddlers from birth to around two and a half years of age. At two and a half years of age they progess to our preschool nursery service.

Through these services we aim to engage and stimulate deaf children throughout their earliest years, helping nurture strong listening skills that will equip them in their journey to developing speech and language.

"Outstanding" baby and toddler provision for deaf children

Ofsted has rated both our nursery services as "Outstanding"

Our baby and toddler services in Hampshire are Ofsted registered - click on this link to read our most recent Ofsted inspection for our Nursery services services.

Activities during our baby and toddler sessions

Our baby sessions last for two hours and toddler session run for three hours. Parents attend the baby sessions once a week with their children and then progress to attending the toddler sessions once or twice a week.

The sessions encompass a wide range of activities that aim to engage the babies and toddlers. We aim to help stimulate the children's residual hearing to help nurture strong listening skills that will equip them in their journey to developing speech and language.

During the baby and toddler sessions, members of The Elizabeth Foundation's teaching staff:

  • monitor hearing aids
  • explain and demonstrate the importance of daily audiological management
  • demonstrate and discuss basic strategies and fun-filled ideas for the development of attention, listening, preverbal and early language skills

A typical session includes: 'hello' circle time, snack time, story time, free play, creative activites, music and singing, and 'goodbye' circle time. The lessons are carefully planned and follow the objectives of the Department for Education's Birth to Three Matters Framework. Music, singing and movement n all of our preschool services.

Music plays a key role in our preschool services. Find out more about the ways we use music...

Assessing progress and setting targets

We regularly assess, with the parents, each child’s receptive and expressive language skills, and their auditory development. These assessments form the basis of regular Individual Education Plans that target specific language and listening skills for development. In addition, every child has the opportunity of individual sessions to help support and consolidate the work done in the nursery environment and develop listening and related language skills.

Supporting families

We also support parents with information sessions and leaflets which cover topics such as audiograms and hearing loss, and listening and language development. In this way, we give parents the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills they need to foster their child's overall development, and to share with others the feelings, triumphs and obstacles their family is experiencing.

We believe that one of the most important aspects of our baby and toddler sessions is the support that parents give to each other. During their time attending our baby and toddler nursery parents and children form relationships and friendships with each other which often last for many years.
