“My name is Ryan Jones, and I was left profoundly deaf as a result of pneumococcal meningitis at the age of 16 months.

“I had a cochlear implant when I was 3½ and I can honestly say that it was the best gift that my parents gave me. I attended The Elizabeth Foundation, where my family and I received the best support we possibly could get and made some lifelong friends.

“After leaving the Foundation I attended school and achieved 12 GCSE A–C grades, then went to college and studied A Level Maths, Physics and Product Design. I then furthered my education at the University of Portsmouth, where I received a 2:1 degree in Electronic Engineering. I won’t lie, it wasn’t easy but I had the right level of support to get me there. One of the best things that came from uni was that I met my fiancée Naz.

“Since university, I’ve been working for a company for 4 years as an Engineer for the development team who design and manufacture medical monitors. I have recently been promoted to the position of Product Engineer. It’s a really varied and interesting job, and I love it.

“I have been fortunate enough to buy a house with my fiancée 2 years ago, and we are currently organising our wedding, as we are getting married at the end of June 2017!

“In summary, my cochlear implant has helped me to live a normal life and I wouldn’t be where I am without it. The Elizabeth Foundation was an amazing place for me and my family, and they have helped us all through a hard time in our lives. It will always be a special place.”
